Winter Friday This Week

Where: The Elberta Heritage Center and WUWU Radio Station aka the Elberta Mercantile aka the old Elberta Library, 704 Frankfort Avenue

When: Every other Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm.

  • February 6
  • February 20
  • March 6
  • March 20

In addition to the games, coffees, teas, popcorns, and chitchat, this Friday we will have special guest Harvey Hespa, who is an adept at knitwear repair. Bring a sock, sweater, or other beloved holy garment, and Harvey will teach you how to make it better than new. Supplies provided.

Next week, March 6, Friends of Turtles will begin discussing Elberta Turtlefest 3, to be held on World Turtle Day, on Saturday, May 23.

Come in from the cold! C.M. Coolidge’s “Dogs Playing Poker” with various winter hats added by me. (Sorry, C.M.) Four of these hats are famous, and if you can identify any of them you will get a prize. So far we have just one winner of the prize, which is a sheet of Year of the Horse Lunar New Year stamps. It’s a major award!

What: A time to meet your friends and make new ones over coffee (regular and decaf), tea, cocoa, and La Croix, share stories and chitchat and news of the day, and play cards and other relaxed games. Yes, absolutely bring your knitting. Some nights there will be a guided game, craft, or activity, but there’s no pressure to do it.

Want to hand off a sweater someone left at your house? Meet them at Winter Friday. Want to find out about doing a radio show? Come to Winter Friday. Want to finally learn how to play euchre? Come to Winter Friday. There will probably be a euchre expert (eucharist? euchranian?) on hand.

The events are alcohol free, friendly to supervised kids, and may include snacks like popcorn.

One regular feature of these evenings will be a signup sheet to let WUWU know you’d like to record your story, or a family member’s, for the radio. The jigsaw puzzle of local culture is not complete without your piece.
